IFTA is an agreement created between Canada and the 48 lower U.S states to collect fuel taxes to pay for road maintenance. The Truckers must get an IFTA license permit to operate their vehicle in all states other than their home state and to report and pay fuel taxes to a single jurisdiction.
If a carrier is a qualified IFTA licensee and does not wish to participate in the IFTA program, the carrier can get a temporary fuel use permit to travel through member jurisdictions based on each state regulations.
If you have an established business with qualified motor carrier operations at your base state and operate to more than one state, then you must register for an IFTA license.
Your qualified vehicle must be used for business purpose and also have the following:
Apply for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) Credentials (HSMV 85008), complete the application and submit it to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. E-file the renewal applications and mail it or submit at the CVDS Walk-in Counter.
Each IFTA licensee receives an IFTA license and must have the IFTA license photocopy in each motor vehicle. The license is valid from 1st January to 31st December of the calendar year.
If a carrier operates a qualified motor vehicle without an IFTA license and decals in Florida , the vehicle operator must get a temporary fuel permit ($45.00) and pay $50.00 fine.
The penalty for failing to file a return, late filing a return, or fail to remit tax due is $50.00 or 10% of the net tax due to all states. Interest at a rate of 1% per month is computed on all delinquent tax dues for each jurisdiction.
File the Florida IFTA quarterly tax returns online or if not filed online, manually complete the IFTA return and the fuel computation found in the mail received by the IFTA carriers. Print the return and mail it to the address mentioned in the return along with the payment due if any.
